When it comes to decorating my holiday tree, I am a big fan of handmade holiday decorations... especially those with cute little snowmen!
For this project, you need your basic production supplies and some smash and fabric fragments. You can stitch it together by hand or machine in less than 10 minutes. The really interesting part comes from the time to decorate them. I am simple, but I believe in your imagination and you can go further.
Needed supplies
Patterned cotton wool [Warm' N Natural works great] or a small amount of cotton felt filled with black embroidered floss black pipe cleaning scrap a piece of earthen cloth hat or crochet cap [optional] orange Sculpey Clay gold metal sewing needle scissors hanging multipurpose Handmade glue gray white sewing thread of rope
pattern : I made a basic snowman shape, about 5 inches high and 3 1/2 inches wide. My model reminds me of the bowling shape.
Carrot nose : I made my own work with Sculpey Clay. You need something that can measure the size of green peas. Roll it into small balls and turn into carrots or teardrops. I used a toothpick to indent the line to give it texture. Then I baked it in a 200 degree oven for 5 minutes to make it hard.
step 1 : Track your pattern onto double-layered batt, but keep cutting for later use. Using black embroidered floss [3 strands], hand-sewn two X-like eyes and five French knots, similar to the mouth. Glue on the clay nose.
Step 2 : You can hand-sewn or machine seams on the pattern line, just make sure the right side is together. Use scissors to trim the fabric to within 1/4 inch of the suture. When finished, cut a small 2 inch incision in the back of the body and turn the snowman over so that the front is now on the outside. Gently fill his stuff with polyester fibers and stitch the threaded closed gap by hand.
Step 3 : Cut two small pieces from your black pipe cleaner and stick them to your stomach to represent the buttons. Cut a piece of cloth that is 1/2 inch by 5 inches in length and tie the scarf around the neck. If they are too long, trim both ends.
Step 4 : You can make your own little hat with felt, yarn [crochet/knit] or you can buy it from a local craft store. For my project, I used a crochet hat on a woman and no hat on my man. Just my personal preference.
Step 5 : Cut a 5 inch long gold metal rope and pass it through the top of the snowman to hang the rope.
