Create a mosaic fixture for your router table
Mosaics make your drums look more professional and elegant. This design is very easy to make and use. Simply cut a piece of laminated MDF into the size [width or length] of an existing router table, then cut 2 x 4 into the same size and screw 2 together. [See picture] Make sure to counter your screws so they won't interfere with you. You only need 2 clips now.
Cutting inlay groove
1. Always mark a line in the router table, the route is fully aligned with the center of router 2
2. For centered inlays, you need to take the length of the shell, divide by 2, and measure the distance from the centerline marked on the desktop. This photo is marked with a 1.5" bass drum hoop. Use the clip to secure the clamp in place.
3. Find the direct router bit size required to embed the stripe. You can find many different sizes online or at your local household goods store.
4. Use thick leather gloves for this part; you don't want to cut your fingers! First, you need to adjust the router so that your first pass won't take too much wood. You need to cut the inlay in very small increments and test the inlay that fits you after each pass. Our idea is to make it as level as possible. Use the clamp as a fence and keep the bottom of the fence firmly against the ring/shell, as you carefully rotate it, always keeping the pressure toward the fence and towards the drill bit. A slight movement in any other direction can have undesirable results. [Also, you don't need your fence to be as tall as the fence in the picture. Just put the fence at the bottom of the fence.]
Cut your mosaic
from
1. To actually cut the mosaic, you need to measure the actual cut made in the housing and then mark these measurements on the housing. Use the straight edge to move the marker down the wrap so that you have a straight line to cut. Test the appropriate inlay strip for the bass drum
2. Cut off the inlay with a sharp pair of scissors. This cutting must be very precise, so cut and accurately cut the line. After the cut is complete, the test is always around the outer casing. If any of the spot strips are too large, mark them and use a pair of scissors to gently trim until they fit.
3. When you are ready to install the strap, use canvas tape to cover the area of the hoop that you do not want to cover with glue. Use a contact adhesive on the hoop and strip. Allow them to dry according to the manufacturer's recommended drying time and then stick them together firmly.
Install smaller inlay strips
I use the "clip-chip" brand of ultra-high-viscosity photo tape [I usually find it in the hobby hall] to install smaller inlays. It has very strong adhesion and is easy to use. Apply it to the back of the stud, peel off the separate stencil strip, and install it in the inlay groove. I made a snare drum with a mosaic made of waste paper. If you are looking for alternative mosaic designs, you may find some very interesting designs. You can also consider using wallpaper packaging drums...
You can also purchase woodwork supplier inlays online or from your local woodworking store. They are available in a variety of wooden designs with different designs and sizes, or they can be mounted using double-sided tape.
