How to make paper look curly

Texture is a very important element of any scrapbook page, greeting card or 3-D craft project. You can easily add texture using curled paper...that is, it has wrinkles like a paper fan. Here are 3 different ways to create Crimped Paper... use them in your next craft project!

Use paper crimping tool

Describe how these tools work... Think about a pasta machine. Put the dough in the throat of the machine; you use the crank to feed the dough through the two rollers; the dough comes out of the machine as you want. This is the exact process of crimping paper with special tools. The difference is that the two rollers of the tool have ridges that can form pleats in the paper. Crimpers can be purchased using rollers with parallel or wavy lines, each offering a unique look. You can find any style in many crafts supply stores, or order parallel presses from your Stampin'Up! Demonstration.

Wrapping paper with a paper cutter

If your cutter has a scored blade, you can add a "crimp" to any paper. Cut your work to the length and width you want, remember that after "curling", the paper will become slightly smaller due to folding. You will make two sets of score markers - one set on each side of the paper. This will provide you with "hills" and "valleys", and then you will fold like a paper fan.

Here's how to create a 1/4" deep "curl": first take a 1/2 inch score mark from the right edge of the paper and then score every 1/2 inch over the entire length of the paper [these are "hills" ]. Turn the paper over and place the first score on the groove of the paper cutter. Now move your paper 1/4" to the right and score. Now the entire length of your work is every 1/2 point [these are "valleys"]. Now wrinkle your paper as if you are making a fan. Make sure that each fold has a good crease, preferably using a bone folder or similar tool.

Manual crimping paper

Now that you understand the concept of curled paper - make folds and fold like a fan - you can make unique curls by hand. Make the hills and valleys by creating the first fold, then flip it over and fold it again, repeating the process throughout the section. This is a very time consuming method, but it gives you the flexibility to create pleats of different widths on a single sheet of paper. This will create a very dramatic look and add a lot of texture.

In summary

These three ways of making curled paper - using special tools, using a paper cutter or handmade - will create a piece of paper, which will definitely add an unexpected dramatic look to your next project. I hope that you can make some Crimped Paper soon!
